Which strengths lend themselves best to executives?
Unlike tests that tell you with near certainty that you’re well-suited for a career in the arts (whether you choose chorus dancer or artist is still up to you), Clifton’s StrengthsFinder test focuses on the tools you have at your disposal. Your strengths also indicate what kind of leader you’re really going to be. Authors Tom Rath and Barry Conchie compiled a book on the subject called Strengths Based Leadership. They noted the following about how strengths surface in leadership roles:
- Executing strengths – Leaders who make things happen.
- Influencing strengths – Leaders who motivate, comfort, and generate excitement.
- Relationship-building strengths – Leaders who build strong teams and unity.
- Strategic-thinking strengths – Leaders driven by potential and the future.
As you read these four categories, it’s likely that you have strengths in multiple areas. Often those with influencing strengths also have strong relationship-building strengths and those with executing strengths also have strategic-thinking strengths. Knowing what you do best is key to finding people and tools to help you make up for the strengths you lack.
Choose to focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses.
If you know that you’re great at building relationships, that’s where you’re naturally going to want to focus your efforts. Our philosophy? Do it. You’ll be happier. Following up with billing, reminders, and similar tasks? That might be harder. So find someone — or something — to work on the necessary tasks that don’t align with your strengths. Not only will you get more accomplished, you’re more likely to reach your maximum level of contribution.
For example, if you’re great with relationships but stumble over organization, don’t focus all of your energy on staying organized. Instead, you should bring on an assistant to keep you in line or find a tool to do it for you.
